What is a work of art?

by Miza-T @ 2007-10-27 - 15:27:44

A work of art is the unique result of a unique temperament. Its beauty comes from the fact that the author is what he is. It has nothing to do with the fact that other people want what they want. Indeed, the moment that an artist takes notice of what other people want, and tries to supply the demand, he ceases to be an artist, and becomes a dull or an amusing craftsman, an honest or dishonest tradesman. He has no further claim to be considered as an artist.

- Oscar Wilde, "The Soul of Man Under Socialism"

I wish some people could understand this...

If some people didn't understand the difference between an artist and a craftsman - they will now. :) James.

Well I can see where you're coming from but I still think some so-called artists are just taking the piss.

I have always said that art like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is simply a matter of interpretation and one's personal perspective.

..the master Van Gogh never sold a painting in his life, worth millions when he died.
Picasso was shunned by the Art community when he allowed to sell reprints of his famous work. He was the richest artist alive and dead.
It is quite unfair though as graduate of Fine Arts is just as long and as expensive as taking law or medicine, but some lives in poverty after.
Specially today, the commercial graphiic artists and computer animation artists are so much in demand compared to the traditional Fine Arts, it is a sad thing!
